Day 9 (7.08.2012) - Farmin' and Canoein'

Day 9 saw us arising early once again to head to the blueberry fields for another assault on the 'Mummy Berries'. Today we felt much more seasoned to the task at hand after our solid 5 hours experience from the previous day. Along with our other fellow WWOOFing companion, Phoebe, we developed a much better system and overall efficiency is up a staggering 97.25%. Cathy decided that at around 1100 it was getting too hot among the blueberries, so we finished our day off in the veggie patch - harvesting beans, kale and anything that was ripe, fertilizing and watering, which was a great change of pace. All the work has given us a huge appetite and the food so far has been great, plenty of fresh salads and veggies and of course delicious blueberries!!

After lunch we decided to take Cathie's Canoe for a paddle and check out the Hawaii Mars (flying boats mentioned in previous blog). We were able to paddle right up to the boat and check it out. It was huge. It is hard to imagine it would be able to take off, but it has already flown over the farm twice, so seeing is believing!!

The Hawaii Mars - Flying Boat.
After our expedition to the Hawaii Mars we headed to the local ale house - The Fish n' Duck and grabbed a 6 pack of tinnies. We floated around for a while slurping on our 'golden neck charmers' simply admiring the awesomeness of nature around us. The weather is amazing - beautiful blue skies with wispy clouds and a delightful light breeze. We eventually came ashore at the local "beach" for a swim. During our swim we witnessed something pretty special, we saw a bald headed eagle fly above us (within 25 meters) with a large salmon still wriggling in its huge claws. It had a massive wingspan, a majestic white head, yellow beak and claws. Not something you see everyday and something that both Jo and I believe to be god damn amazing!!

Thanks to google, this is similar to what we experienced.

And.... That's a wrap from Avalon Farm.

Love Jo & Mitch xoxox
